What new teachers said about change
We assume that some aspects of the first couple of years of teaching might be universal for new teachers, although the extent to which these departments discussed planning and teaching might have made their induction different from that at schools where procedures and test results dominate. As well as the kinds of comment you would expect from any new teacher after a couple of years, e.g. "I have got better at teaching", there were comments which were specific to a particular approach to teaching: "I am more clear about what can be achieved in what time when you let the learning follow the activity", "I change because change is part of the system we work with".
One teacher who had been dissatisfied and expressed low morale in her first year, saying privately that she was 'not coping', but towards the end of the second year reported that the effects on students taught by herself and others had given her a renewed commitment to teaching
