Talk about mathematical habits, not topics
Focus on the development of mathematical habits, rather than coverage, and by structuring the scheme of work into extended themes rather than lists of topics.
Some teachers said they needed to learn to spend longer on each activity so that students could delve further into maths, "to hang on in there", to develop resilience, "to push beyond making easy questions and choices". To do this they needed to present "chunks" of work which allowed exploration of maths, so that students can develop skills, resourcefulness and resilience within some coherent maths.
