What was it like to work in these departments?

What did the teachers do?

We interviewed all teachers of the cohort who had consented to be in the project at the beginning of the project and again in each of the three project years, one of these being a post-observation interview. The interviews were structured and brief. In the interviews we asked about teachers' perception of department aims, their own aims for their class, how they would characterise their teaching, and their perception of how the maths team operated. We attended, audio-recorded and took field-notes some department meetings, and also held regular meetings of all three HoDs, again audio-recording and taking field notes.

We observed several lessons for each teacher, videoing some for research purposes.
