Discussing mathematics work
(n=33 end of year 7)
All students discuss work with friends and most also discuss it with others; 4 out of 33 never discuss work with people other than friends. 13 out of 33 never discuss mathematics with the whole class. There seems to be some resistance to talking with non-friends or in the whole class. This is illustrated by two students who volunteered why they would not contribute to class discussion:
"I daren't"
"I prefer working on my own. It is less distracting and then I get the work done"
