I am
Students had a fairly high opinion of their mathematics, but generally avoided 'very good'. At the most underachieving school, answers were skewed towards the negative end. | Although very small numbers are involved, it was good to see that some students developed a more positive impression of their own maths during the project. There was no significant loss in self-esteem during the project. |
My teacher thinks I am
The majority thought that their teachers thought they were 'good' or 'ordinary' in mathematics | They were not getting negative messages from teachers in spite of being in mixed ability classes and having low test results. There is an interesting difference between the number of students who say they are 'very good' and the number of teachers who give the impression of thinking that. It looks as if some students believe teachers overstate how good they are, but broadly there is agreement. |
Other people think I am
The majority said 'good' and 'ordinary' but there was a higher percentage who said 'not so good' than in the other two questions | This result also demonstrates maintenance of good self-esteem, but 13% believe that others see them as 'not so good', and this is in line with their own views. These students may think teachers have too high an opinion of them and that they and others have a more realistic opinion. |
