Tool use
Something we noticed in the videos (but was not mentioned by the teachers to us) was how teachers introduced tools to students. In earlier videos (not for publication) we noticed that two teachers allowed students to work out for themselves how to use compasses and straight edges to construct shapes. In these video clips we see something similar. In T1 the teacher discusses with students what tools they need to measure circumference, and what they are using calculators for. In N3 students have worked out for themselves, perhaps with help from others, methods of using tracing paper to draw rotations. However, it is also clear that she has shown at least one student explicitly how to use it in order that he should be able to participate in the rest of the lesson.
